Maths

West Moors Middle School 341Mathematics is multi-dimensional in both analytical and creative directions. It is arguably the most technical and disciplined subject encountered by pupils within the 9 – 13 age range.

Our general aim is to develop all levels of mathematics relevant to the abilities of the individual pupil and to the demands of the everyday world and of further developments in the subject. Detailed and progressive medium term plans are followed across the four years across the ability range, incorporating a wide range of topics. Concepts, knowledge and skills expand as mathematical topics are revisited and extended. Specific practice is provided for national assessment tasks taken by pupils in Yr6 (SATs) and Yr8.

Pupils are grouped by ability from their first entry into the school. The grouping system has built-in flexibility and is constantly reviewed based on objective testing and teacher assessment. Pupils may be moved between groups during the year when their rate of progress makes this desirable.

Regular teacher-pupil contact and pupil evaluation of class-based tasks ensures that a child’s progress is continually monitored and effectively developed through the allocation of appropriate resources and materials. Ofsted expects that pupils should be able to apply their mathematical skills across the curriculum and, as with English, they will assess pupils’ abilities to do this.
